Hollywood musicals are definitely having a resurgence right now, with “La La Land” taking home six Oscars and almost winning the award for best picture. From “The Sound of Music” to “The Wizard of Oz,” musicals have been among some of the most iconic and memorable films in cinema history, transporting audiences to a world where character development is best expressed in well-choreographed song and dance numbers.
While it’s hard enough to make a good movie balancing great characters, engaging plots and relevant themes, musicals must embody the triple threat by throwing amazing songwriting, choreography and performances into the mix. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that so many musicals miss the mark and come out as mediocre instead of magical.
That's why the data analysts at PrettyFamous, an entertainment data site by Graphiq, compiled a list of the worst movie musicals of all time. To be considered for the ranking, all films needed to have more than 6,000 votes on IMDb and had to be in the “musical” genre. The musicals are then ranked in descending order by their Smart Ratings — a score out of 100 that takes into account a movie's IMDb rating, Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and Audience Score, Gracenote rating, Metacritic Metascore and inflation-adjusted U.S. box office gross. In the case of ties, movies with the most votes on IMDb are ranked worse.
Note: This list includes any movie with "musical" as a genre, which can include “musical comedies” that might be poking fun at the genre anyway.
